I started building Electric Monkey about nine years ago now. I had this crazy vision of creating this huge place with production rooms, a hundred square meter live room and a big enough Control room that I could fit all my vintage equipment. So I set about trying to find a location in Amsterdam, my home city. This was no mean feat and after months of looking I finally found the ideal place. It was a huge four hundred meter empty space. Looking back I must have been crazy, underestimating the enormity of this project, but I was young and naive and it was this that made me go for it. So I begged, borrowed and invested all that I had and got to work. Jaap Vlaaming Designed the five production rooms, control room, studio and machine rooms. He was forever patient with me. I called upon his expertise time and time again. So, I set about ordering plasterboard... so so much plasterboard. A couple of great friends came along tirelessly helping me out day after day, year after year. It took blood, sweat and tears. I’m a handy kind of guy and without any real building experience I pieced the place together, bit by bit, learning as I went.
Carefully selected over many years. I am a passionate vintage collecting junkie :) I actually started collecting and restoring equipment long before I'd started my studio, and I'm glad I did, some of my earliest purchases are my absolute favorites, like my 'Tube Reverb' and my.. It’s these special unique pieces of equipment that set my studio apart from the rest. I can create really authentic timeless sounds that resonate in all of us. If you're looking for a truly unique sound then look no further, giving musicians their own identity and setting them apart from the rest is what I do best.
